Noni, (Morinda citrifolia), is a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree that bears a bitter tasting, smelly fruit covered with hexagonal fruitlets. There are numerous species of Noni, and the fruit go by many common names such as Indian or beach mulberry, dog dumpling, and cheese fruit. The tree is adaptable to growing in a variety of soils and habitats in the warm climates of the Pacific Islands, Asia, Australia, South America, and the Caribbean.
In addition to being a source of food and dye, Noni has been one of the most important medicinal plants in the Polynesian culture for 2000 years. It was used to treat a variety of ailments including inflammation, arthritis, wounds and infections, skin problems, childbirth complications, menstrual cramps, and stomach or digestive problems1,2.
Increasing awareness of the potential healing effects of Noni has stimulated extensive research and a flood of products in the marketplace. Several vital phyto-nutrient compounds have been identified in Noni and are associated with its vast array of potential health benefits. The following is only a partial list3:
Polysaccharides – stimulate and modulate the immune system and its response to cancer.4
Glycosides – scavenge free radicals and helpful in preventing cancer5; may also help prevent varicose veins and phlebitis6.
Anthraquinones (Damnacanthol) – antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer. These chemicals have been shown in laboratory tests to inhibit irregular cell formation and to kill pre-cancer cells, Lewis Lung carcinoma7, and prevent DNA damage. They stimulate the immune response to cancer by activating the body's T-cells (especially natural killer T cells)7.
Scopoletin –anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial agent. Scopoletin is a vasodilator and can regulate blood pressure8. It binds to melatonin and helps to regulate sleep, hunger, and body temperature. It can activate receptors of serotonin, the body’s ‘happiness’ hormone, contributing to feelings of well-being9.
Selenium – a trace element and important anti-oxidant. Supports elasticity of the skin and may slow the aging process. Selenium also increases oxygen flow to the heart and may assist in preventing blood clotting and hypertension3.
Terpene – anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, andrejuvenates cells3.
Limonene – breaks down cholesterol and gallstones, relieves heartburn and acid reflux, and may help the body fight cancer10.
In addition, Noni has been indicated as a useful adjunct in treating osteoarthritis11, ADD/ADHD, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Alzheimers, and Parkinson’s Disease6.
