    Galactose is a type of sugar, similar to fructose and glucose. It has been identified as one of 8 essential sugars needed in the diet for proper cell development and functioning of the human body.1Chemically speaking, it is a simple carbohydrate called a monosaccharide with a very specific arrangement of its 6 carbons, 12 hydrogens, and 6 oxygens.2Galactose occurs, only rarely, as a free molecule in nature, but is commonly found linked to other molecules, forming more complex compounds such as glycolipids (bound to a fat molecule), glycoproteins (bound to a protein molecule), and more complex carbohydrates. Many of these substances play critical roles in the human body in cell structure, cell communication, and the exchange of substances in and out of cells. The correct functioning of these processes depend upon the presence of Galactose.3,4

     

    The most common dietary sources of Galactose are dairy products and human breast milk, where it is bound to another very important monosaccharide, Glucose – the primary source of energy for all living things. Together, Glucose and Galactose form the disaccharide milk sugar known as Lactose. Lactose breaks down to its monosaccharide subunits when digested and cleaved by the enzyme Lactase. The two ingredients Glucose and Galactose are then freed and available for absorption into the bloodstream. Lactose intolerance is a common ailment that prevents many from being able to eat dairy products.5(These people need to get Galactose from other sources such as the pectins of fruits and vegetables, legumes, tomatoes, persimmons, and pumpkins,6,7or via dietary supplements such as BioPure Healing Products’ Galactose powder.)

     

    Researchers have discovered that Galactose plays a pivotal role in cell membranes and the surrounding extracellular matrices as a sort of mediator or traffic cop. It is intricately involved in facilitating communication between cells and in sorting and regulating the exchange and function of substances – such as hormones, enzymes, and growth factors, – between cells and the surrounding matrix.3,4,8,9These functions help the immune system to recognize “friend or foe” and fight off disease.10A similar example of the powerful presence of Galactose is in the differentiation between blood types O and B. These two blood types are chemically identical except that B has a molecule of Galactose. This seemingly small difference could mean life or death for a person receiving a blood transfusion.3,11,12

     

    Galactose has been called the “Brain Sugar”13because it appears to play an important part in brain development.14,15Some research indicates that Galactose may benefit patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and hepatic encephalopathy by helping to remove toxic excess ammonia in the brain and liver16. Recent studies have shown that Galactose is capable of being delivered to cells through an insulin-independent pathway, and can then be converted to glucose and utilized.     Galactose occurs in two different structurally related forms; L(-) Galactose and D(+) Galactose.19L(-) Galactose is not very common and occurs primarily within some plants and invertebrate animals.
